Stokesley

Stokesley is an elegant town on the River Leven at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Its market town charter was granted in 1223 and a weekly market is still held every Friday in the main square, which is referred to locally as the “The Plain”. Every year, on the third Saturday in September, visitors come from all around to the Stokesley Agricultural Show - one of the biggest agricultural shows in the North.

Stokesley is a beautiful little town. The River Leven runs just behind the Main Street and is crossed by the old Pack Horse Bridge, which dates from the 17c. The Leven is bordered by grassy, tree-lined walkways, ideal for a peaceful stroll while admiring the magnificent backdrop of the North York Moors and Roseberry Topping.
Georgian and Regency buildings line either side of the wide cobbled streets and the Main Street is dotted with little independent shops, cafés and restaurants.

In the nearby 14c Church of St Peter & St Paul you can find woodwork carved by the "Mouseman" - Thompson of Kilburn whose work adorns many of the local churches.

Stokesley is the gateway to the Moors and the East Yorkshire coast, making it a very popular place to stay and there are plenty of options for accommodation.

Nearby places of interest include Great Ayton (childhood home of Captain James Cook) and the village of Bilsdale with its widely renowned spectacular views.
