Description:
‘Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world.’ Written over eight centuries ago by the monastery’s third abbot, St Aelred, these words still describe Rievaulx today. Set in a beautiful and tranquil valley, it is among the most atmospheric and complete of all the ruined abbeys of the north.
After exploring the soaring ruins of the abbey, discover Rievaulx’s history in the interactive indoor exhibition, The Work of God and Man. Then relax and unwind in the new tearoom and enjoy delicious dishes made with the finest Yorkshire produce.
Throughout the summer, Rievaulx Abbey comes to life with a programme of events for everyone to enjoy, from Have-a-go Archery to Medieval Monastic Fun. Back by popular demand this year are Serenity Saturdays, where you can indulge in a heavenly massage or try the ancient art of Tai Chi. For details, please see our website.
